Comprehensive Vision Care for Life

You may have wondered to yourself if you’re getting the most out of your vision and eye health. It’s common to assume that just because you see fine, your eyes must be healthy, right? Well, this isn’t always the case.

Your eyes undergo plenty of changes as you grow older, some of them so subtle you might not notice them at all. But over time, these changes can affect your vision and eye health and sometimes introduce the risk of developing a sight-stealing condition. Eye exams can help detect these problems before they rob you of your sight.

At Golden Hills Optometry, our eye doctors in San Jose are here and ready to help you manage your eye health. Visit us for a comprehensive eye exam today!

What to Expect from the Eye Exam

We take pride in our ability to tailor our eye exams to our patient’s needs, but we follow a specific procedure to ensure we look at every aspect of your eye health as thoroughly as possible.

If you call us to book a contact lens exam or a laser eye surgery consultation, our team will let you know if you need to set aside more time for your appointment. Certain services require a few extra steps, but we can find solutions that work best for you and your eyes.

When you come for your eye exam, you can expect:

A Kick-Off Discussion

We start every eye exam with a detailed conversation regarding your eye health, family health history, personal health history, and current vision issues. Your answers will help us search for specific problems you might be at risk of developing and discover solutions that suit your eye and health needs.

Once we get a complete picture of your health history, we’ll next determine your visual acuity (the sharpness of your vision). We use some of the latest technology as well as tried and true methods to test your eyesight and help us determine your lens prescription.

Even if you already have glasses or contact lenses, your prescription can change as you get older. Because of this, we can compare your current prescription and see if you need an update.

It’s extremely important to have your eyes tested for eye disease as you grow older. Many eye diseases can develop with little to no symptoms in their early stages but can cause permanent damage to your vision over time.

We use advanced diagnostic technology to get a detailed look at your eye health, including your retina, macula, and optic nerve. Then, if we discover any issues, we’ll get to work on building a customized treatment or management plan to help preserve your eyesight.

At the end of the exam, we’ll provide you with our findings, recommendations, prescriptions, and treatments. Then, depending on your needs, we may book a follow-up appointment to monitor your eyes.

If you’re looking for a pair of trendy new frames, we’ll love to walk you through our dazzling selection of designer brands. Once you find your perfect pair, we’ll fit them and offer any cleaning accessories you need!

Common Adult & Senior Eye Issues

Presbyopia

Presbyopia is a common refractive error that can develop as you grow older, generally as you reach 45 years old or older. Presbyopia can make it difficult for you to see things up close, and you could need multifocal lenses to help correct the issue. Presbyopia can also develop even if you have other refractive errors, like myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.

There is a strong likelihood that you may develop cataracts as you grow older. Cataracts are a common eye condition that causes your eye’s natural lens to become cloudy or milky, making it difficult for you to see clearly.

It develops as proteins on your lens clump together as you age, causing the lens to become rigid and hazy.

Glasses and contact lenses may correct early vision problems caused by cataracts, but only surgery can remove the cataract permanently.

Age-related macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of blindness in adults over 55. This eye disease damages your macula, the centermost part of your retina. Your macula is responsible for the central vision needed to read, see fine details, and even recognize faces.
